AS-EPA Participated in the 2020 Pacific Islands Environment Directors’ Meeting Through Virtual Platform
The 2020 Pacific Islands Environment Directors’ Meeting which is generally held around this time of the year in San Francisco, California at the US EPA Region 9 headquarter has now gone virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS-EPA) was able to participate in the meeting using its Video Tele-Conferencing capability from the office in Utulei. The meeting was virtually attended by staff of US EPA Region 9, Guam EPA, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands and the Freely Associated States. The meeting was held over three days from August 3 – 5, 2020 with a three hour per day schedule.
American Samoa Watershed Management and Protection Program FY19 Annual Report
The American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS-EPA), in collaboration with various environmental resource management organizations, work together each year to reduce the amount of nonpoint source pollution within the Territory through the Watershed Management and Protection Program. The program includes a monitoring strategy designed to track water quality and nonpoint source (NPS) management measures simultaneously to allow the Territory to evaluate the performance of the management measures, and to assess the success of the measures in achieving water quality objectives. This report describes monitoring strategies and provides available information on improvement in water quality, implementation milestones, and reductions in NPS pollutant loadings for FY19.
American Samoa Receives $300,000 from EPA for Revitalization of Contaminated Properties
PAGO PAGO, American Samoa - Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that American Samoa was selected to receive a $300,000 grant to assess and clean up contaminated properties under the agency’s Brownfields Program.
Nationwide, more than 151 communities have been selected to receive grants totaling more than $65.6 million in EPA Brownfields funding. These funds will help under-served and economically disadvantaged communities assess and clean up contaminated properties and return them to productive reuse.
AS-EPA Drinking Water Update February 26, 2020
AS-EPA collected samples from schools post-Tropical Cyclone (TC) Wasi. Samples were collected on February 25,2020 and the results are listed below. Schools located in the Standing Precautionary Boil Water Notice prior to TC Wasi are recommended to continue to boil water before consumption.

AS-EPA Hosts Dry Litter Piggery Program Workshop
The American Samoa Environment Protection Agency (AS-EPA) hosted the Dry Litter Piggery Program Workshop in American Samoa from October 7 – 11, 2019. The workshop brought together national representatives from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) which include Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Cook Islands to the Territory through funds made available from the Pacific Regional International Waters Ridge to Reef Project (IW R2R) via the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
AS-EPA HOSTS WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS STORMWATER MANAGEMENT
The Governor’s Coral Reef Advisory Group (CRAG) - Land Based Sources of Pollution (LBSP) sponsored a one-day workshop for members of the Project Notification Review System (PNRS) Board to discuss stormwater management in American Samoa. The workshop was hosted by the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS-EPA) at its Green Building in Utulei.
